“Soul” at Shaare Zedek

Shaare Zedek Medical Center officially unveiled a major art sculpture, “Soul” placed at the recently opened, new main entrance to the hospital. The sculpture is a work of London-based artist David Breuer- Weill and was commissioned by the Rosenfelder family of London in memory of Marilyn Rosenfelder, a long-time supporter and friend of the hospital.

Attending the installation ceremony, the artist introduced his work- fashioned out of gleaming polished steel as the representation of the human globe as a single human form. He said the intent was to use sculpture to reflect the Talmudic dictum of “He who saves one life it is as if he has saved the world entire.”

Uri Schwarz, Director of International Operations for Shaare Zedek thanked the family and the artist saying, “This remarkable new piece has literally changed the face of our hospital, a center of healing, by offering a sculpture that conveys joy, light and a spirit of life while offering tribute to a woman who meant a great deal to us”

Marilyn Rosenfelder together with her husband Anthony served as close friends of Shaare Zedek for many years and supported the hospital’s development through Shaare Zedek UK. Her daughter Harriet, accompanied by her husband and children said that the sculpture was a most fitting tribute to an institution which meant so much to her mother. “My mother was a person who always endeavored to turn every situation into the positive and this sculpture allows people to see the hospital and feel a sense of light and happiness.”

For Breuer-Weill this is his second installation in Jerusalem with the first entitled “Jerusalem- The Center of the World” furnishing the plaza in Teddy Kollek Park outside the Tower of David.”
