G, a 98 year old woman and Jerusalem resident had suffered through some of the worst horrors of the 20th century. First she was forced to fight off the Nazis, then live under Stalinist Russia, before finally coming to Israel in a boat of European refugees that very nearly sunk.
But once in Israel, G thrived and has been blessed to enjoy a long and fruitful life. That life has now been even further extended due to a complex cardiac catheterization recently performed in the Jesselson Integrated Heart Center, directed by Prof. Michael Glikson.
The woman had been brought to Shaare Zedek due to her trouble breathing which had resulted from a chest infection and buildup of fluid in her lungs. Once at the hospital, she was able to undergo the valve replacement procedure using a very precise catheterization method that required only local anesthesia. Within just a couple of hours, G was already feeling much better and a day later she was released to continue her recovery at home alongside her deeply appreciative family.
Director of the Catheterization Labs, Dr. Danny Dvir, who performed the procedure said, “More and more we are able to perform operations via catheterization that until only recently would have required open chest surgeries. The result is that we can successfully help patients well into their 90s and beyond.”
