Dr. Moshe Carmon, Director of our Breast Surgery Unit introduced a new, computerized system for collecting information for the treatment of breast cancer patients in Shaare Zedek and this system recently won an Israeli Innovation Award.
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers. This new information system is designed to provide a personalized treatment solution specifically for situations when there is a lot of coordination required between the departments (surgery, x-ray, mammography, oncology, plastics, IVF, breast health unit, genetics,…).
The program was developed by CR Medical based on guidelines established by doctors and therapists from Shaare Zedek Medical Center.
Dr. Carmon explained that this system promotes better communication and interdepartmental coordination and identifies “bottlenecks” within the patient’s experience. The system helps with quality control, communication with patients, allows doctors to provide “smart follow-up” with patients and warns of unusual situations that may arise that require special attention from the attending physician. Dr. Carmon shared, “This system offers information gathering that is relevant at every stage and supports the decision-making process…Each patient is at a different stage of the disease and their own specific course of treatment, making it is necessary to keep up-to-date with the progress of each patient’s treatment at any time. The system gives warnings to prevent failures in treatment and support medical decisions… Medical informatics, provides full and up-to-date information on each patient, along with continuous and multi-departmental follow-up serving a large team of physicians and other bodies involved in each treatment at every stage.”
