Professor Boris Chertin, the new Head of Urology in SZMC

Congratulations to Professor Boris Chertin, the new Head of Urology in Shaare Zedek Medical Center.

Prof. Chertin was born in Russia, he is the third generation of doctors in his family and he made Aliyah in 1991. Prof. Chertin has been working at Shaare Zedek Medical Center for over 20 years.

Professor Chertin, an adult and pediatric urologist, focuses on children with disorders in their urogenital systems from birth to adolescence. He has turned the pediatric department into an international center of excellence with doctors from all over the world coming to be trained in the uses of certain techniques and treatment processes. A European center also was opened to train doctors to perform endoscopic repairs for vesicoureteral reflux based on techniques developed in his department.

His department is also recognized as a Center of Excellence for hypospadias repair and the department is among the world’s leading centers for children with endocrinological disorders who need sexual organ repair. The department also operates a multi-disciplinary clinic for urinary disorders, which provides professional treatment for children suffering from bladder problems (including bedwetting).

Prof. Chertin shared, “We have brought together pediatric and adult urology to benefit our young patients with continuous care and to create one group of staff who can work cooperatively to best serve the needs of our patients. Babies born with congenital anomalies sometimes require additional care later on in life. This approach enables us to provide them care by the same staff whom they already know and who have experience treating other people with similar issues. In addition, our medical staff will have the opportunity to following young patients, over time and know what issues they face not only as children but also as adults.”

When asked about his decision to become a doctor Prof. Chertin explained, “Medicine is a fascinating, evolving and challenging field. In my work, I have the opportunity to see my results and it is very satisfying. Urology involves highly complex and innovative surgeries and offers the opportunity to be involved in clinical research and also have relationships with patients and their families over time. I can help patients in situations when sometimes the outlook seems quite bleak and that is very rewarding. I am also fortunate that I have a network of colleagues at Shaare Zedek and around the globe who can complement my experiences and offer insights. At Shaare Zedek, there is a warm family feeling. I have been here for a long time, I know everyone who works around me and they know me.”

The mother of one of the patients Prof. Chertin operated on using the Da Vinci Surgical System said, “From the time we met Professor Chertin we knew we were in good hands. He is absolutely exceptional.”

We wish Professor Chertin the best of luck in his new position as Head of the Urology Department.
