In recognition of over three decades of service in leadership in making Shaare Zedek Medical Center a pride of medical advancement for the city and its people, tonight Professor Jonathan Halevy was awarded the Yakir Yerushalayim award by the city’s Mayor Moshe Leon.
The award is the city’s highest civilian honor and bestowed on individuals who have made a historic contribution to the development of Jerusalem.
In accepting the honor Professor Halevy said “I can think of no other city in the world that is more fitting to raise ones children and to instill within them the values of our heritage and traditions.
In 1988, I came to Shaare Zedek, which was a small, humble hospital lacking many of the major departments that define modern medicine.
My successor Professor Ofer Merin inherited a hospital with over 1,000 beds that is able to offer the people of Jerusalem everything that advanced medicine has to offer. We are today the city’s largest hospital so I take great pride in my life’s work which has allowed this hospital to achieve these heights while always preserving the traditions that make it so special.”
