On January 27th, 1902, Shaare Zedek Hospital officially opened its doors in a brand new building on Jaffa Street culminating decades of efforts of a coalition of European Jews to open a modern hospital in the city.
With many of the founding figures behind the hospital being German Jews, that date was chosen out of respect for the German Kaiser, who celebrated his birthday on that date – as well as it also falling on the Jewish holiday of Tu B’Shvat.
Today, we now mark the beginning of the 120th year of Shaare Zedek providing advanced and compassionate care for the people of Jerusalem and Israel, and the central role our hospital has come to play on behalf of the development of our city, our nation and the international medical community at large.
