The Journal of the American Society of Nephrology recently published an article about a pilot study at Shaare Zedek Medical Center. The study is testing a new method to identify excess iron levels in the blood of patients with chronic kidney disease. .
Doctors have increasingly been giving patients intravenous iron supplements. There is significant concern regarding potential future side effects of this practice. The pilot is being run in Shaare Zedek Medical Center and will soon begin in two other medical centers in Israel and one abroad. The article was written by Prof. Itzchak Slotki, Head of the Department of Nephrology and Dr. Zvi Ioav Cabantchik, from the Department of Biological Chemistry, Alexander Silberman Institute of Life Sciences in Hebrew University.
