While the delivery room is well-known as a place of high emotion, this week the staff in the Wilf Mother and Infant Center at Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center experienced a particularly remarkable birth that left everyone in tears.

Two and a half years ago, Shira Ish-Ran was seriously injured in a terror attack at the Ofra Junction outside of Jerusalem. Seven months pregnant, she arrived at Shaare Zedek fighting for her own life and that of her unborn child.

The child was delivered in an emergency cesarean section before being transferred to the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Tragically, the extent of the injury was too great and he passed away three days later. Before burial, the boy was named Amiad Yisrael.

Despite being in critical condition upon arrival, Shira recovered well and was able to leave the hospital in good condition. Her husband Amichai was also lightly injured in the attack.

Some of the very same medical staff who treated Shira and her son following the attack were alongside her as she returned to Shaare Zedek this week to deliver a baby boy who came into the world weighing 2.855 kilo (6.28 lbs.)

Shaare Zedek Director General Professor Ofer Merin congratulated the Ish-Rans saying, “The entire Shaare Zedek family celebrates this occasion alongside Shira and Amichai. We were together with them in those most difficult of moments and we’re thrilled to be with them now. We wish them only happiness and pride from their new son.”
