Israel’s Embryonics is working with Shaare Zedek Medical Center to adapt technology developed to assist in the IVF process to help in the diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 patients as well as other diseases.
Embryonics developed an algorithm which analyzes clinical data using geometric deep learning technology to personalize hormonal treatments for IVF patients. Geometric deep learning is a new field of machine learning that gains insights from complex data. Ms. Yael Zamir, the Co-Founder and CEO of Embryonics, shared, “We want to see if we can use our technology to help with the treatment, the diagnosis and progress of COVID-19 patients and other diseases.”
Embryonics has partnered with Shaare Zedek Medical Center to use the database created by Shaare Zedek of COVID-19 patients to develop predictive software based on the same geometric deep-learning tools it uses for personalizing hormonal treatments for IVF patients.
Embryonics will examine Shaare Zedek’s data and review the patients’ characteristics (age, where they live, their medical history, if they are smokers and other clinical parameters) to formulate predictions about how the disease will progress for specific patients. Zamir explained that when a new patient arrives, the system should be able to look at what happened to patients in the past with similar traits and make forecasts and recommend potential treatments.
Ms. Renana Ofan, the Director of the Shaare Zedek Innovation Center, emphasized that the hospital has granted Embryonics access to patients’ data under strict privacy regulations, and is working closely with the firm to ensure the data is clear, reliable and relevant. She shared, “We must have collaborations with tech firms [to make much-needed breakthroughs]. We bring our clinical knowledge, and they bring the technology. We are happy to join forces with anyone who wants to, and have very many of these kinds of collaborations.”
