There are approximately 900 women diagnosed with Gynecologic Malignant Tumours each year in Israel. The Department of Surgical and Oncology Gynecology at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem treats many patients who are diagnosed with Uterine or Ovarian Cancer.
The department performs a wide range of surgeries related to the surgical field: Simple and radical hysterectomies in various approaches, intrauterine surgeries such as tumour and polyp removal, and surgeries to treat urinary incontinence. The surgical approach chosen is tailored to each patient’s specific needs, according to their medical condition, to ensure the success of the surgery and the patient’s safety before, during, and following the procedure.
The Department of Surgical and Oncology Gynecology mainly treats those undergoing radical surgery, combined with Radiation or Chemotherapy. The customary approach in the department is to treat the tumour in a targeted manner as much as possible, and not to impair the fertility of the patients being treated. This is because these patients are often young and wish to eventually have children. Therefore, when treating these patients, the Shaare Zedek Medical Center takes great care to preserve fertility in the treatment process. Ways of doing this include: Pumping eggs and freezing them (as part of the in-vitro-fertilization department), as well as freezing embryos and sections of the ovary. Every operation is done to ensure that the uterus is not damaged and can carry pregnancy later. The department has proven success in the field and is among the few in Israel that performs radical cervical resection while preserving the uterus itself, in cases of malignant tumours of the cervix.
