Doctors in Shaare Zedek Medical Center for the first time repaired a right trigeminal heart valve (tricuspid) via coronary catheterization. In the past, such patients would have required open heart surgery. The development of a new clip coupled with advanced three dimensional echocardiographic imaging technology and our specially trained medical staff led to Shaare Zedek being among the very few medical centers who can offer this cutting edge procedure.
Dr. Yaron Almagor, the Director of Shaare Zedek’s Interventional Cardiology and Cardiac Catheterization Lab in the Jesselson Heart Center explained, “A lot of progress in this area provided us with options to treat the valves on the right side of the heart among our critical patients. These patients have very complex conditions that significantly increase the surgical risk. When a patient’s medical condition is such that surgery is not an option, the only way to repair the valve is using catheterization.
Dr. Rafael Wolff, Director of our Structural Heart Disease Unit added, “I hope that in the future, this procedure will be an option for young people and people who are not considered high risk for the surgery as well.”
