Shaare Zedek’s Imaging Institute, led by Dr. Ofer Binyaminov, produces 250,000 images a year. It is staffed by radiologists, x-ray technicians, nurses, paramedical personnel… who provide medical teams across different departments critical information around the clock.
Following our 15th Healthy Friday series with experts, “Imaging: a Look from the Inside and How Imaging Devices are Changing the Face of Medicine,” Ms. Judy Siegel-Itzkovich wrote this comprehensive piece which was published on an Israeli news website explaining the advances in imaging and the critical role of our imaging institute.
In 1895, the first picture was taken using an x-ray. Since then, the feld of imaging has advanced significantly and includes an array of technologies including: ultrasound, computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional MRI (fMRI) and nuclear medicine imaging, including positron-emission tomography (PET). These devices are critical in the diagnosis and treatment of an array of diseases. These images can determine if a tumor is growing, if someone suffers from cirrhosis of the liver, if there is calcification inside blood vessels, if a cardiac bypass has clogged up, stop bleeding from intestinal ulcers, treat varicocele which causes infertility among men, diagnose a stroke, determine how much tissue in the brain has died, diagnose an monitor cancer, and much more.
