A 71 year old patient who suffered from kidney disease underwent a lung implant. The patient suffered from nerve damage within his digestive system which resulted in the development of a fibrous mass in his stomach called a gastrointestinal (GI) bezoar which is composed of aggregates of inedible or undigested material found in the GI tract.
After two failed attempts to endoscopically disband the mass, the patient was referred to Dr. Joseph Lysy, Director of our Neurogastroenterology and Pelvic Floor Unit in our Digestive Diseases Institute. Dr. Lysy explained, “Medical literature describes using coke as a solvent medical for bezoar for the first time in 2002 by a Greek physician, Dr. Ladas, who had seen his car mechanic remove rust from the screws with Coke…the doctor tried the method on his patients and it was effective. Since then, there has been more evidence of very positive results…Within three days [under careful supervision] the mass in the patient’s stomach disappeared…Now, three years later, the mass has not returned… ”
